The Last of Us Part 2: The Latest Update

195

Like me, if you’ve recently booted up “The Last of Us Part 2” in the past years and something feels different, then let me tell you that you are not alone. Fans around the world were caught off guard by The Last of Us Part 2 update 1.08, which quietly rolled out with several important fixes. While not a content-heavy patch, it still matters,  especially for those playing the Remastered version or using New Game+ modes.

Let’s break down everything included in the update and explain how it differs from earlier versions.

What’s New in The Last of Us Part 2 Update 1.08?

The Last of Us Part 2 update 1.08 was not accompanied by a flashy trailer. Nor was there a huge developer announcement; it focused on a range of low-key improvements:

  • Bug Fixes: Most notably, players reported a glitch where New Game+ upgrades would vanish after a recent patch. The 1.08 update addresses this bug, restoring lost upgrades and ensuring they properly carry over.
  • Stability Improvements: Several crash scenarios were resolved, particularly during enemy encounters in late-game chapters.
  • Performance Enhancements: Players using the PlayStation 5 to run The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered noticed minor boosts in framerate and overall responsiveness after the update.
  • Accessibility Tweaks: A few accessibility options were fine-tuned to enhance the experience for players with motion sickness or hearing impairments.

So if you noticed something “off” during your playthrough, The Last of Us Part 2 update probably fixed it back then.

A Quick Look Back: The Last of Us Part 2 Update 1.05

Before diving deeper into 1.08, it helps to understand where we’ve come from. The Last of Us Part 2 update 1.05  was released back in mid-2021 and included more noticeable changes:

  • Grounded Difficulty Mode was added, offering an ultra-realistic challenge.
  • Permadeath Mode was introduced.
  • Graphical enhancements and performance boosts for early PS5 users.

While 1.05 focused on adding modes and enhancing the replayability, update 1.08 is more about stability and polish, vital for those still exploring every inch of the game world.

How Does This Affect The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered?

If you’re playing The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, this update is just as important. Even though the remastered edition has been optimized for PS5 with upgraded visuals and features, such as Lost Levels and Guitar Free Play mode, it retains the same game engine and core systems as the original.

The fixes introduced in The Last of Us Part 2 update 1.08* improve:

  • Save data consistency across multiple playthroughs
  • Crash frequency in memory-heavy areas
  • New Game+ carryover consistency
  • Minor framerate stutters

For Remastered players, this patch smooths out the small—but—frustrating wrinkles that occasionally appear during replay-heavy sessions.

Community Reactions to the Latest Patch

As with any update, the The Last of Us Part 2 update today stirred conversation online. Here are a few early community takes:

“Literally was playing the same save file last night and had all of my NG+ upgrades after the patch they’re all gone… now it’s fixed again. Thank you Naughty Dog!”

“Glad to see they’re still ironing things out. Game’s been out for years, but it still deserves this love.”

“Patch 1.08 isn’t huge, but it fixes issues that have been around for months.”

While it’s a minor update, the attention to detail hasn’t gone unnoticed. Long-time players and trophy hunters alike appreciate that Naughty Dog continues to support the game with thoughtful fixes.

Is This the Final Patch?

It was hard to say when the patch came out. With The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered out and a multiplayer spin-off rumored (though recently canceled), it was possible that The Last of Us Part 2 update 1.08 might have been one of the final housekeeping patches.

However, later on, Remastered Patch 2.0.0 is also live now on PS5. Not only this but it also includes some new content. The latest patch for The Last of Us Part II Remastered is Patch 1.4 for PC, released on May 19, 2025, and Patch 2.0.1 for PS5, released on April 17, 2025. The PC version also had a Hotfix 1.1 released on April 14, 2025. The PS5 version had Patch 2.0.0, which was released prior to Patch 2.0.1.

Still, Naughty Dog has a history of revisiting titles for years after release. So even if this isn’t the last, it could mark the end of the active patching cycle, particularly for the Remastered version.

Final Thoughts

While “The Last of Us Part 2 update 1.08” might not introduce new content or modes, it’s an important update that demonstrates Naughty Dog’s continued commitment to polish and player satisfaction. Whether you’re deep into The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered or finally doing your first playthrough, this patch makes the journey a lot less buggy.
